This half term Year 2 have had some exciting topics. They have all worked hard with lots of changes to daily timetables to incorporate sports day, diversity week, transition day and much more.

In English, we have focused on letter writing. We have looked at all the features including how to write an address. We were all very excited because we were writing a letter to Mrs Davies our new teacher and telling her all about ourselves. It also gave us an opportunity to reflect on the year and share our successes and what we want to get better at.

Our history topic has been to look at toys from the past and present. This has been fun as we have been thinking about the toys that we play with, and we even had a look at the toys Miss Hoke had when she was little. We have been comparing them and thinking about the similarities and differences. Did you know that in the 1950s, Mr Potato Head use to be just the facial features and you needed to put them on a real potato?

We have had great fun in art. We have been exploring clay and creating pottery in the style of our artist Emma Bridgewater. We practiced how to make a pot by pinching and using coils with playdough. We looked at Emma’s work and then designed our own piece of pottery and then made our final piece using air drying clay. Some of us made plates, pet bowls, cups and vases.

Have you ever listened to rock music? In our music lessons we have been listening to songs and bands in the rock genre and even designed our own electric guitars. We all had the chance to play different roles in our class band with some of us playing the recorder, some on the drums, vocalists and finally keeping rhythm with a tambourine. Our favourite songs were “We Will Rock You” by Queen and “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi. What we did realise was that being a rock star is exhausting as you always have to jump up and down.

Note from Miss Hoke:

On Monday 11th July we invited our parents in to share our learning and celebrate this year’s success. We want to thank every adult that came and joined us. It was lovely to see how excited the children were and how much they engaged by telling you about their learning and trying activities with you.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of my class the best of luck as they move on to the next stage of their learning journey. It has been a busy year and they have achieved so much and have done it all with joy and enthusiasm. I hope you all have a lovely summer, and rest, relax and recuperate ready for Year 3. Have fun!
