Highlights from Year 1
BackWhat a fantastic term Year 1 have had!
The children have become, scientific researchers, actors, actresses and historians along side all the other learning they have done.
In English the children have been exploring poetry and the elements they need to use to make a rhyming poem. The children have also had a letter sent to them from Mickey and Minnie Mouse asking them to make a new character! The children did a fantastic job not only designing their character but writing a letter back to Micky and Minnie explaining their designs.
In Maths we have focused on 2D and 3D shapes. We have looked at their properties and the different faces that they have. The children have experimented by making 2D shapes on a geoboard, they have also tested out building towers with the 3D shapes to see which shape best suits the bottom and top of the tower. The children decided that a cuboid was best for the bottom and that a cone or pyramid could only go on the top of their tower.
In history we have been learning about the local area and comparing photos of what Tilehurst and Reading used to look like compared to what it looks like now. The children were really surprised with the amount the local area has changed! During black history month we have learnt about Claudia Jones and how she became an influential woman. That she campaigned for equal rights for black men, woman, and children and that she also was one of the founders of Notting Hill Carnival.
We have become scientists looking at our body and our sense. The children have used practical activities to challenge their taste buds to sort food into groups: sweet, sour, bitter and sharp. We have looked at the eye where we have labelled the parts then had discussions on what each part of the eye does.
