In year 4 this term we have been reading some exciting books, including the BFG (which the children loved) especially the nonsense vocabulary! The Race to the Frozen North amazed the class as it was based on a true story, and we were able to research the main character, Matthew Henson. We have now started The Midnight Fox, and it will be exciting to see how this story develops next term.

Maths has been primarily based on fractions as this is a huge topic, covering a variety of skills and concepts. The children have risen to the challenge and have grasped the idea of wholes and how they split into equal parts to create fractions, converting from mixed to improper fractions and recognizing the difference between the denominator and numerator.

Writing we have started teaching skills that are essential to improving writing and the children are really enjoying the linking back to the book The Race to the Frozen North and using images to help stimulate their writing. The progress has been really great to see.

In the wider curriculum subjects, a range of topics have been covered, including creating a plastic bag water cycle and a range of mountains that formed a ski resort using a key to identify the different features. Romans in history covered the invasion of Britain and the way they fought, which was really impress. The Anglo-Saxons who came after the Romans and created settlements and farms in peaceful times. We compared the armour and realized that the Anglo-Saxons only battled if they felt their livestock or tribe were being threatened. The children have also created tessellated panels which will be sewn into one huge quilt. In order to practice our Art also involved sewing and the children created something they wanted to embellish on an item of clothing. I was extremely proud of their resilience with the sewing. This idea of embellishing was linked to the study of Vivienne Westwood (the designer).

Overall, this term has been filled with making links across a range of subjects and the children have enjoyed researching, creating and investigating the topics covered. I am extremely proud of what they have achieved.

Looking forward to all the discoveries we will make next term!
