Spring Term Highlights from Year 1
Back
Year 1 have been impressive at showing excellent foundational skills this term. Good sitting postures and daily practice of letter and writing formations. These are strong foundations needed for the key stages to come.
Writing
In Writing we have practiced dictation and grammar skills such as finding nouns and writing simple sentences using our Phonics skills to write independent sentences from our class reader “The Tiger who came to tea”. We have some impressive starter writers in our class. I am very proud of the writing we are producing.
Maths
We have been focusing on place value up to 50, we continue to practice identifying numbers that are less and more than and counting in 10s and ones. In length and height, we enjoyed using rulers to compare objects against each other. We have recognized that to measure an object against a ruler we must start at 0.
Science
We explored parts of a plant this term. We enjoyed the sunshine and some outdoor time finding wild plants that grow on our school grounds. We found daisies, daffodils and buttercups, we learnt that wildflowers are a vital food source and habitat for a wide array of animals, including pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as other insects, birds, and even some mammals.
DT
We explored bridges from around the world, how they have been built and the design they have. We collected and used recycled materials to construct our own bridges that can sustain the weight of a plastic toy. It has taken lots of resilience and evaluation on how we could improve our designs to design our final pieces. We enjoyed making them and talking about how different each design is.
Art
The highlight of our term was exploring Picasso and learning about who he is as an artist. We practiced the skill of colour mixing and using Primary colours to create secondary colours. We mostly enjoyed inviting our parents to school to show off our learning in Art. It was a pleasure to have you in school engaged in our learning.
Message from Mrs Stark
Overall, I am so impressed with the progress the children have mad so far. Not only in the progression in their foundational skills but also in their engagement and attitudes to learning. Reading has been supported well by our families and Phonics assessments are looking strong this term. Let's continue to support our children in these areas for strong outcomes in preparation for Year 2. Thank you for all the parent engagement. I value this greatly. Have a wonderful Easter break. I am looking forward to our Summer Term together.
