Autumn Term Highlights from Year 2
BackWhat a magical and exciting term we have had! It has been filled with glitter, glue and singing.
Christmas Carols
This half term the children in Key Stage 1 all took part in our Christmas Carol performance. The children had a wonderful time practicing their songs. It was a wonderful way to start the festive season. Thank you to all the parents that came to watch and support, it was an excellent turnout. Every single child sang their hearts out and left some of our audience with tears in their eyes. Well Done KS1. You were all superstars!
Magic Breakfast
Year 1 and 2 were lucky enough to have a visit from magic breakfast this half term. We also look forward to our Magic Breakfast every Friday morning. Children enjoy a variety of breakfast items and are full of cheer around the breakfast tables. Thank you, Magic Breakfast, for making this all possible!
English
We have been focusing on a ‘Recount’ and ‘News report’ text this term. We have looked at some great features in order to prepare for our own writing. We learnt the skills of writing in the first person, third person, how to use conjunctions and writing in the past tense. Year 2 particularly enjoyed writing their news reports on the “UFO that was spotted in Tilehurst”. Miss Sanghera enjoyed playing along to our make believe story too.
Maths
Year 2 have been learning about adding and subtracting over this half term. We have used our base 10 to support adding and taking away 10. A big focus has been to spot and use our number bonds to 10 to help us spot patterns and solve more complex number sentences. For example, we know that 6 + 1 = 7 so 16 + 1 = 17. We have also started looking at Money, how to add and make totals using pounds and pence. We enjoyed pretending to jump on the bus and going Christmas shopping to buy our items in class. We love Maths!
Science
We have looked at ‘What animals need for survival’ and ‘Materials’. We have learnt about food chains and the difference between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Did you know most humans are omnivores because we eat plants and meat? During our afternoon sessions we used different resources to work together and create posters of different habitats. We also enjoyed testing different materials in class to see what they are made out of and discovering that certain things are natural and others are man-made and deciding whether certain materials could be harmful for the environment.
History
We have really enjoyed learning all about The Great Fire of London. Firstly, we learned about what a century was and looked at what life was like in the 17th century and how it was different to our lives today. It was very interesting finding out about how the fire started and why it spread so quickly from building to building. Finally, we thought about our building and fire brigade today and how technology has developed to ensure a disaster like that doesn’t happen again.
A message from Mrs. Stark
It has been a busy term. I would like to thank every parent for their “Good Mornings” at the door in the mornings, the quick conversations, check ins and most of all the continued support and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
