English

In English we have turned into authors and wrote our own story. We based our stories around a traditional tale that we knew well; The Three Little Pigs. The children have explored exciting adjectives to describe their characters as well has thinking up their own problem and how this can be solved. We have had scary spikey hedgehogs wanting to eat ants, evil butterflies and kind snakes. The children were excited to write their stories.

We also explored how to write an explanation text. We looked in detail about the key parts of an explanation text and what it important that we make sure in in it. The children were fascinated by butterflies and their life cycle after remembering them from Reception. We researched the different stages of how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly.

Maths

We have been learning all about fractions and the parts that they can be spilt into. The children used objects that they enjoyed to visually see what a half would look like and what a quarter would look like. They also found out how many children they can share these with.

We have explored multiplication and division and learnt the first steps to being successful in this. The children used arrays to learn about counting both rows and columns as well as exploring calculating doubles. We have been learning about counting in our 2s, 5s and tens too.

RE

The children this term have been looking at objects that are special to their religion. The children spoke with confidence and pride when they saw statues that they have in their homes. They talked to their class about the different reasons that they have them and where they are placed.

Science

In Science we looked at what a plant is, and how they grow. We found out a plant is a living thing like we are, they need water, air and sunlight to grow. We tested this out by planting our own Sunflower seeds and cared for them and watered them. We were surprised at how quickly they grew with the first shoots coming up after only a week! We researched the tallest sunflower in the UK and it was over 5 meters and we are aiming to get ours that high.

We also learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees and how we can Identify them. We found it really interesting to find some trees never lose their leaves.

Geography

This term we have taken a journey around the world and have ended up in the Artic circle. It has been very cold there but luckily it is coming into their summer so the snow has started to melt, and we can see the plants growing. The children have loved comparing the seasons to ours and looking at how much snow falls during the artic winter months. They also found it really interesting to find out that in the winter there can be days with no sun!
