BackEnglish
The children have been busy learning about how to write recounts of something that they have done and newspaper reports.
The children wrote some fantastic recounts about our trip to the park. This gave Rosen class the real experience to write about and this really supported their writing.
After writing our recounts, the class had a mystery visitor that came and looked at their work and wrote messages of positivity on their tables! This engaged the children in a new genre – Newspaper writing. The children decided that the aliens had come to see them. The children have really enjoyed learning about the different features of a newspaper and then learning the skills to write them. Following the interesting information that we learnt in history we travelled back to 1969 and wrote a news paper report on Neil Armstrong being the first person to step on the moon.
Maths
In Maths, Rosen class looked at place value up to 50. The children have been learning about tens and ones and how we can use this to start to partition numbers. The children have also looked at estimating a number on a number line.
We have really enjoyed our topic on measuring and using different objects to measure including cubes, our feet and a ruler in centimetres. We have really enjoyed testing out the different ways to measure and deciding which one works best.
Science
Our topic this term has been Everyday Materials. The children have explored the different textures of materials and we have found out how they were made. The children were surprised that wool comes from a sheep and that cotton comes from a plant.
We conducted an experiment to investigate if a fabric is waterproof and would be able to be used for an umbrella. The children predicted which materials they thought would be able to use. We then tested some of these materials to see if their predictions were right before writing up our findings.
PSHE
This term our focus has been on caring for the wider world. We have thought about what we love about the world and how we need to care for those things. Following this we looked at the sea and how the animals can be affected by pollution that is left at the beach and in the sea. We thought about the different things that we can do to reduce this and made posters that can be put up to remind people to take their rubbish home. This lead the children to think about the different ways that we can recycle and the 3R’s; Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
History
In history we have been learning about different explorers and have found some fascinating information about Christopher Columbus and how he found the Americas and how he travelled there. After thinking about what life would have been like living on a ship and finding out after 10 weeks they had to eat biscuits with worms in them. We then travelled through time and learnt about Neil Armstrong and his trip to the moon. The children loved to learn about Neil Armstrong and his team. This interest inspired our newspaper reports.
