This half term in Maths, the children have been practicing new methods to calculate numbers up to 1000. We have learnt how to use column addition and subtraction to solve large number problems and recognize how, by calculating using the inverse, we can find the answer much more quickly in some instances.

In Reading, we have explored the text Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Space.

There has been some fabulous vocabulary to discuss, and it has been an inspirational text to get us thinking about what it would be like to go up in a rocket.

In writing, we have worked on writing a description, taking inspiration from our class reader, describing what we think space looks like. We upscaled our sentences by adding similes and boastful language to show off our vocabulary. We then focused on writing an argument and linked our writing to our Geography topic, Where does our food come from? We wrote arguments as to why we should grow our own food, focussing on persuasive language techniques and a formal structure of an argument.

Our Geography topic this term was Where does our food come from? We spent time learning about where some of our favourite foods are most commonly grown, for example, avocados and passion fruits. We used globes to locate different countries and learned about the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and finally the damaging effect that food production is having on our planet. Did you know, by adopting a vegan diet, we could solve world hunger, prevent deforestation, and save lives of suffering animals? It is certainly food for thought!

In art, we have focussed on the artist, Gunta Stolzl, who was well known German textile artist who played a fundamental role in the development of the Bauhaus weaving movement. We spent time weaving thin paper strips to make colourful artwork. We also celebrated the Chinese New Year by weaving our own Chinese lanterns.

In Science our topic has been Plants. We explored each stage of growth, ways in which flowers disperse their seeds and the roles that bees play in pollinating our flowers.

Finally, in Spanish we have focussed on the statement I can. We learnt how to say and write simple sentences, starting with I can.
